If you ever travel to
Hokkaidō, Japan’s second largest island, be sure to search out an Densuke watermelon, perhaps the rarest and most expensive watermelon in the world.
If fact, they are so rare that sometimes they produce only sixty fruit during a harvest and Japanese purchase these watermelons as gifts.
Not only because of their rarity but also due to the fact that they are superior to American watermelons because they are sweeter and firmer, they sell for about $200.00 each.
A perfect example of a Densuke watermelon, weighing 17 pounds, sold at an auction to a man wanting to support local agriculture, he paid a seedy $6,100.00 USD.
